I was tagged by the cosmically talented Sandra Odell to add to The Next Big Thing Blog Hop and tell you all about my current work-in-progress.
1) What is the working title of your book?
As yet, I have no working title. Which is bad, because I always felt that a work-in-progress never really gels until it has been christened with a name. Much like a baby. Because these projects are our babies, right? At the moment, I refer to it as “the succubus book,” because it’s about … well, succubi.
2) Where did the idea come from for the book?
It came about as I was brainstorming for an idea for a novel. I wanted to tap into the success of the paranormal romance, but not go the route of vampires, werewolves, demons, zombies, or other such things. The succubi are certainly not new, just less trod upon.
3) What genre does your book fall under?
Paranormal romance. I think. Maybe urban fantasy. I get confused by the two.
4) Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
Hmmmm … no idea. Seriously. No ideas about casting. But I would definitely have Julianne Moore in it, because she’s so hot.
5) What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
A run-of-the-mill gravedigger unearths a pair of trapped succubi sisters, and tries to recapture them before they can kill too many people, only to find out he himself has a history connected to them. And that sounds really lame.
6) Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
I would like to shop it to agents before considering the self-publishing route. Or perhaps I would publish it under my own imprint, Hydra House. Although some very commonsensical and smart people have told me not to do so.
7) How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
It’s still in process. I have 50,000 words and want another 20,000 before I consider it a complete first draft.
8) What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
Very difficult to say. Maybe Kat Richardson’s “Greywalker” series?
9) Who or What inspired you to write this book?
The main character is a grave robber, and I wrote a story while attending Clarion West that included a grave robber. I wanted to do something else with that, although they are miles from being the same character. It was more the profession I didn’t want to lose. And then to build a paranormal romance around him and a succubi.
10) What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
I want it to go places a paranormal romance doesn’t normally go. I like to think it’s full of surprises, like Han Solo. It’s got young Christian men getting chewed up. It’s got the violent romance of the succubi and the incubi. It’s got a strange social order. It can get kind of weird.
